USPA NEWS - The 2016 Hong Kong Book Fair opened last week attracting scores of visitors from around the world. Well-known figures in the literary realm such as Hannah Rothschild, Wilbur Smith, Sarah Howe, and Simon Winchester also attended the fair.
The 2016 Hong Kong Book Fair opened last week attracting scores of visitors from around the world. This year´s event is the largest in the fair´s history, featuring more than 600 exhibitors from over 30 countries and more than 350 cultural events. Well-known figures in the literary realm such as Hannah Rothschild, Wilbur Smith, Sarah Howe, and Simon Winchester also attended the fair.
Books aside, more than twenty consulates have set up booths in the International Culture Village section to promote their respective cultures and generate interest from avid readers. The lucrative education and tutoring industry in Hong Kong has also taken advantage of this opportunity by placing stalls in the education, language, and children´s section. Students can find a plethora of exam guides and mock exam papers to prepare for their matriculation exams.
A company called Capstone (on the third floor behind the Grand Hall) occupies three stall spaces to sell board games. Most of their staff is youths volunteering to help customers understand and try out different kinds of games they have available at the stall. It is interesting to note that they also have two stores in Hong Kong where customers are welcome to go to try out some of their newer games before they decide whether or not to purchase it. The company specializes in importing German (the largest producer of board games in the world) and American games as well as Chinese versions of those games. Los Libros Mas Pequenos Del Mundo ““ or the smallest books in the world, is a Peruvian company (in the smallest stall on the first floor) that specializes in selling tiny versions of bestselling books such as the Holy Bible, the Koran, and Disney stories. Their books range from being palm sized to pinhead sized. All reasonably priced, customers have the option of purchasing them with matching tiny bookshelves. To take advantage of discounted ticket prices, arrive before noon each day, present an elderly card, or present a foreign passport to receive $10 tickets. Otherwise, tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children. Regular priced tickets can be purchased in advance at over 600 Circle-K and 7-11 stores as well as HK Ticketing outlets. Fair is open everyday until Monday 10am-10pm with extended hours during the weekend and 9am-5pm on Tuesday.
