History
Born on December 12, 1921 outside of Westmoreland, Tennessee, Mayes got an early start in the country music business. In 1940, he joined the Grand O' Opera in Nashville, Tennessee.In 1952, Mayes traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina, and gained employment at WBTV News 3 (Channel 3), when the news station was only three years old. He remained the voice of WBTV from 1952 until 1968.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Vaughn Mayes; daughter, Brenda Mayes Lupino and sisters, Mabel Dodson, Elizabeth Simmons and Peg Bullington. Doug is survived by his son, Joe Mayes; granddaughter, Heather Leslie Rahn and great grandson, Theo.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at Denver United Methodist Church, Denver, NC, with Rev. Jeff Johnsen officiating. MemBurial will follow at 2 PM in Evergreen Cemetery, Charlotte. The family will receive friends from 6 ““ 8 PM, Tuesday, October 20, 2015, at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville.Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville, is serving the family of Doug Mayes.
