American Treasure Hunter Mel FISHER discovered the Sunken Treasure of the Nuestra Senora de Atocha, the most famous member of the fleet of Spanish ships that sank in 1622 after sailing into violent hurricane. In July 20, 1985, Mel FISHER found over 40 tons of Silver and Gold, including more than 100,000 Spanish Silver coins as "pieces of eight", Gold coins, the finest Colombian Emeralds, Silver and Gold Artefacts, and over 1,000 Silver bars, the Atocha contained riches vast enough to replenish the nearly depleted treasure of the Spanish crown... To mark the thirty year anniversary of this discovery, Auction House Guersey's in New York auctionned off selected items from Mel FISHER's collection. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Michael Abd Jr Have a Heart Foundation, which worked to provide Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) to schools Nationwide.

The Atocha was laden down with riches from the New World and was heading back to Spain when he sailed straight into a hurricane. The vessel went down with 255 people on board, on whom only five survived. It was the most famous boat of at least eight in the Spanish flotilla that sank during the storm.
